Ushers

What would Worship Service be

without the crisp white uniforms you see
Without the black and white charge to keep the Sanctuary
God’s house would be in order, just barely

Who would hold the doors then
for the choir to march in
going in before
stepping tall and sure

Who would seat the congregation
and meet their various expectations
Sister every Sunday likes her usual place
or Heaven help the look on her face
And then there are those who like to sit in the back pew
so they can leave before the service is through
The visitor wants a window seat
even though she’s got to step over everybody’s feet

And what about the offering
Who would give out the collect plate
orderly and stepping precisely and straight
Moving down the isle in uniform
hand behind the back - white glove adorned
Who would give change back to the brother with the twenty
and the sister with the dollar who thinks a quarter is plenty

And what about the Ministers
Who would see them to the pulpit
reading their signals and responding quick
Who would keep the water pitcher
full on a tray placed
just right for them to taste

And what would the summer service
be without fans
given speedily from those white gloved hands
Cooling many from the heat
Waving continuously like the sea

Praise God for the Ushers
for their service is no less precious
than the Pastor, Deacon or Trustee
We are all in service for the Kingdom, you see

What would worship service be
without the crisp white uniforms you see
without the black and white charge
to keep the Sanctuary of God
